Chernow's biography of the man who built American financial institutions from nothing and destroyed himself socially while doing it. For this library the value is the study of relentless written output as a form of leverage, and of a temperament that could not let an attack go unanswered. Most useful as a case in ambition without judgement. Least useful if you want a compact read; it is eight hundred pages.
