    The Art of Action

    Stephen Bungay, 2011

    In one paragraph

Perhaps the best business book I've ever read: analyzes leadership into its components and failures to adapt -- and how to avoid them. von Clausewitz's On War reformulated in practical terms for business. Highly recommended.

    Key insights

Three gaps: knowledge, alignment, effects. Most organisations respond to each with more detail, which widens all three.

Directed opportunism: specify the intent and the boundaries, then let people decide the method.

Briefing should end with the subordinate restating the intent in their own words. If they cannot, the plan does not exist yet.

    Recognise it early

The failure and the correction sit side by side deliberately. Read the left column asking whether any of it is already true of you.

    What goes wrong

    Over-specifying plans

Shorten plans; emphasize purpose and boundaries

    Centralized bottlenecks

Push decisions to edge within intent

    Too many metrics

Keep a vital few that reflect intent

    Trust deficits

    Increase presence and after-action reviews

    Infrequent feedback

    Shorten loops; act–sense–adjust
