Chen's account of why network effects are almost impossible to start and hard to keep: the cold start problem, the tipping point, and the eventual ceiling. The contribution is treating the network as something with a lifecycle rather than a permanent moat. Most useful when building anything whose value depends on other users being present. Least useful elsewhere, and it is written from inside a venture portfolio, so the survivors do most of the talking.
