    Tiny Habits

    BJ Fogg, 2019

    In one paragraph

BJ Fogg’s behavior design method shows how to create lasting change with tiny, easy actions tied to reliable prompts and reinforced by immediate celebration, prioritizing ability and environment over motivation.

    Key insights

Behaviour happens when motivation, ability and a prompt converge. Motivation is the least reliable of the three, so design for ability.

Start absurdly small: two push-ups, one page. The size is what removes the need to decide.

Celebrate immediately. Fogg's claim is that the emotion at the moment of completion is what encodes the habit, not repetition alone.

    Recognise it early

The failure and the correction sit side by side deliberately. Read the left column asking whether any of it is already true of you.

    What goes wrong

    Starting too big

    Reduce to a 30‑second version

    Weak prompts

Attach to a guaranteed daily anchor

    Skipping celebration

    Add a 2‑second success signal

    Environmental friction

    Stage materials; remove steps

    Motivation dependence

Keep baseline tiny; bonus is optional

    The same idea, argued differently

    James Clear

    Carol Dweck

    The full breakdown

    Before you close this

Naming the specific moment you will act roughly doubles the odds you do.
